How
does Zyban work?
The means by which Zyban increases patients' ability to abstain
from smoking is not completely known. Presumably it inhibits certain
chemical receptors in the brain that provoke craving for smoking.

What
form does Zyban come in?
Zyban (bupropion) comes in a round purple film coated tablet with
the engraving of "Zyban 150" on its surface. The sustained
released tablet is made only in the 150mg strength.

What are signs I am addicted to
cigarettes?
You may have a cigarette addiction if you have one more of the following
signs:
• You desire to quit smoking, but continue to smoke.
• You have made one or more serious, but unsuccessful, attempts
to stop using tobacco or significantly reduce the amount you use.
• Your attempts to stop smoking have caused physical withdrawal
symptoms, such as a tobacco craving, restlessness, anxiety, irritability,
difficulty concentrating, headaches, drowsiness or stomach upset.
• You develop a tolerance for tobacco. Smoking the same number
of cigarettes no longer produces the same effect over time, making
it necessary to increase the cigarettes you smoke to gain the desired
sensation.
• You continue using tobacco with a serious physical condition
such as heart or lung disorder (which you know is worsened by tobacco
usage).

What is nicotine withdrawal?
When a smoker addicted to cigarettes attempts to quit smoking, they
may experience symptoms that can be psychological, emotional, or
physical in nature. These symptoms are called withdrawal. Additionally,
they may experience irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating,
restlessness, or depression when trying to quit smoking.

How
effective is Zyban for smoking cessation?
Clinical studies performed on Zyban have shown a reduction in cigarette
cravings as well as nicotine withdrawal symptoms associated with
smoking cessation to a significant degree compared with placebo.
Reductions in the following withdrawal symptoms were most evident:
• irritability
• frustration, anger
• anxiety
• difficulty concentrating
• restlessness
• depressed mood
Clinical studies have also shown Zyban works best in reducing withdrawal
symptoms of nicotine, significant reduction in cigarette craving
and elevated long term abstinence rate. Also, the ability to quit
smoking with Zyban greatly depends on commitment.

Can
I do anything to make Zyban more effective?
Yes, although Zyban is an effective medication used to quit smoking,
it may work optimally if you are enrolled in stop smoking programs
or behavioral support programs.

How
should I take Zyban?
The recommended dosage is:
• one 150mg tablet in the morning for the first three days.
• beginning on the fourth day, one 150mg tablet in the morning
and one 150mg tablet in the early evening.
Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart.
Never take an additional dose of Zyban. If you forget to take a
dose, do not take an extra tablet to "catch up". Do not
take more tablets than prescribed. Wait and take your next Zyban
at the regularly scheduled time. This is important to not increase
your chance of having a seizure.
It is essential to swallow Zyban tablets whole. Do not chew, divide,
or crush tablets.
You may take Zyban with or without food.

How
long can I remain on Zyban?
For most patients, it is advised that you continue Zyban treatment
for 7-12 weeks to support long-term smoking cessation success. You
may need to stay on Zyban for a longer period of time, depending
upon how quickly you withdraw from nicotine. If you have been smoking
for a long time, it’s possible your body has become accustomed
to it.
Zyban aids in reducing cigarette withdrawal symptoms as you remove
cigarettes from your routine. It's important to remain on Zyban
for 7-12 weeks but it may be necessary to continue taking Zyban
for up to 6 months if your nicotine dependence is great.

When
should I stop smoking once I start Zyban?
It takes approximately one week for Zyban to reach the effective
levels in your body. To maximize your ability to quit smoking, you
should not stop smoking until you have been taking Zyban for at
least 1 week. You should set a goal date to stop smoking during
the second week of Zyban use.

Can
I drink while taking Zyban?
It is not advisable to drink alcohol while taking Zyban. People
who drink a lot of alcohol and then quickly stop drinking may increase
their risk of developing a seizure.

Can I smoke while taking Zyban?
It is not physically dangerous to smoke and take Zyban at the same
time. However, continuing to smoke after your goal date to quit
smoking will seriously decrease your chances of smoking cessation.

Can I take Zyban with mild-moderate
chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema?
Yes, it has been shown that Zyban in combination with a behavior
modification program for smoking cessation has helped people with
COPD quit smoking. It is important to join and participate in a
behavior program, counseling, or other support program offered in
your community.

Zyban for pregnant
or breast-feeding women
Zyban is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Women should not start a smoking cessation program with Zyban if
they are breast-feeding or plan to become pregnant.

Zyban for patients with liver or kidney problems
Indicate any liver or kidney problems on your medical history/personal
profile before taking Zyban. Depending on the severity of your condition,
Zyban dosage may need adjusting.

Can I use Zyban with nicotine
patches?
Yes, Zyban and nicotine patches can be used concurrently but only
under the supervision of your healthcare professional. Using Zyban
and nicotine patches together can potentially raise blood pressure.
Your physician will most likely want to check your blood pressure
regularly to make sure it stays within acceptable levels. Do
not smoke if you are using nicotine patches or other nicotine products
along with Zyban. It is very possible to take in excessive amounts
of nicotine and experience serious side effects.

Zyban and sleeping
If you have difficulty sleeping, try not to take Zyban too close
to bedtime. If taking two tablets daily, take one early in the day
and the second late afternoon or very early evening. Remember to
take them at least 8 hours apart. Additionally, limit or avoid drinking
any caffeinated beverages in the late afternoon or evening.

Zyban and seizures
The risk is quite small, but there is an elevated chance of developing
a seizure while taking Zyban. However, it is essential to inform
us on your medical history/personal profile about any other prescription
or nonprescription medications you are currently or planning on
taking.

Zyban side effects
The most common Zyban side effects are:
• dry mouth
• difficulty sleeping
If you experience dry mouth taking Zyban, you might be more comfortable
if you drink plenty of water. Some noted improvement when sucking
on lozenges or chewing sugarless gum to keep your mouth moist.
Side effects that caused people to stop Zyban during clinical studies
were:
• shakiness
• skin rash
Stop taking Zyban with symptoms or signs of allergic reaction such
as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing.

Who should not take Zyban?
Do not take Zyban if you:
• are taking Wellbutrin (bupropion HCl) Tablets or Wellbutrin
SR (bupropion HCl) sustained-release tablets
• are taking other medicines containing bupropion HCl
• have or have had seizure disorder (like epilepsy)
• have or have had eating disorder
• are currently taking or recently taken monoamine oxidase
inhibitor (MAOI)
• are allergic to bupropion HCl
