What is Zovirax?
Zovirax cream (acyclovir cream) is a potent antiviral medication used for the treatment of Herpes Simplex Virus infections. It comes in a 5% ointment in 15g tubes.

Zovirax cream is selectively absorbed into cells infected with Herpes Simplex Virus. Within the infected cell, Herpes Simplex Virus coded enzymes convert Zovirax into its active form. This active form of Zovirax interferes with viral DNA replication, inhibiting replication and growth of Herpes Simplex Virus.

Since Zovirax cream is preferentially absorbed and converted into its active form only by Herpes Simplex Virus infected cells, Zovirax is much less toxic for uninfected cells.

About Herpes Simplex Virus
The Herpes family has over 80 known viruses. Of these, 8 are known to cause disease in humans. The most common disease is Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 (HSV-1) and type-2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 and HSV-2 look the same under the microscope, and either can infect the mouth (oral herpes, lip blisters, mouth blisters) or genitals (genital herpes). Usually, HSV-1 occurs in the oral region, and HSV-2 occurs in the genital region.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 usually causes herpes labialis commonly known as oral herpes, cold sores or fever blisters. These are highly infectious open sores that crust over before healing. Although not as likely, HSV-1 can cause genital herpes.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type-2 is a contagious viral infection primarily causing genital herpes in men and women. The most common signs and symptoms of genital herpes include recurrent clusters of blisters, bumps and rashes in genital areas. HSV-2 can also cause herpes labialis (cold sores), although less often than HSV-1.

Transmission of Herpes Simplex Virus
Unlike other viruses transmitted through air, Herpes Simplex Viruses require physical contact. The most common cause of transmission is mouth-to-mouth (HSV-1) or genital-to-genital (HSV-2) contact. However, there are other possible means of transmission, such as hand-to-genital and mouth-to-genital contact.

Clinical benefits of Zovirax for Herpes treatment
When Zovirax cream is applied to the infected area it reduces healing time, the duration that the herpes infection causes pain and decreases the time that the infection sheds Herpes Simplex Virus. Viral shedding is the process by which Herpes Simplex Virus is transmitted from one person to another.

How to use Zovirax for Herpes treatment
Begin Zovirax cream therapy as early as possible following initial signs and symptoms of herpes infection. The most common signs of infection are cold sores, or clusters of blisters, bumps and rashes in the genital area. Symptoms of herpes infection include tingling, itching, burning or redness of the skin at the infection site. Herpes symptoms often begin before any cold sores (lip blisters), genital blisters, bumps and rashes are noted.

• Apply small amount directly on the infected area 5 times a day.
• Massage Zovirax cream into the skin very gently.
• Use latex gloves when applying Zovirax cream. Herpes Simplex Virus can stay on your fingers during application and be spread to healthy body sites or other people. We supply a free box of latex gloves with each order of Zovirax cream.
• Remove gloves and wash hands immediately.
• Use Zovirax cream until the infection is completely crusted over or shows distinctive signs of healing.
• Do not use Zovirax cream in or around the eyes.
• Do not continuously apply Zovirax to try to prevent infection from reoccurring.

If I am on therapy, can I still spread the virus?
YES, you can still spread the virus. No Herpes medication or Herpes treatment has been proven to prevent the spread of herpes infection. You and your partner should always use condoms and avoid sexual contact during a herpes outbreak (genital herpes, oral herpes, lip blisters, mouth blisters).

Side effects for Zovirax
Some recurrent or long-term side effects for Zovirax are:
• swelling or pain at application site
• itching at application site
• redness at application site

If you experience any of the above side effects, stop using Zovirax cream.

Cautions with Zovirax
