What is Retin-A?
Retin-A is a 0.1% Tretinoin gel used to unclog acne follicles and
bring comedones (acne pimples) to the skin's surface. Skin will
actually look worse the first few weeks because of this. Retin-A
will also reverse some signs of aging and sun damage, such as brown
sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Is Retin-A an effective adult
acne treatment?
Retin-A was significantly superior to a control gel in decreasing
comedo (acne pimple) count in several clinical studies. Approximately
25% of patients achieved superior results using Retin-A as an acne
medication.

Can
I use Retin-A for stretch marks?
Tretinoin has demonstrated a reduction in stretch marks when applied
daily. Treatment works best on new stretch marks still pink or reddish
in color.
In a paper reported in the Archives of Dermatology, investigators
found the use of 0.1% Tretinoin in early treatment of red or pink
stretch marks significantly improved the appearance of early stretch
marks. No improvement was noted in mature "white stretch marks."

How do I use Retin-A acne medication?
Wash face twice daily with mild non-soap cleanser, like Cetaphil
lotion, available at your local drugstore. Pat skin dry and wait
10-15 minutes before applying Retin-A. Make sure to use mild soap
and do not wash your face excessively. Abrasive soaps/cleansers/medicated
creams/lotions can increase chances of skin irritation.
Apply a thin layer (pea sized) to affected areas at bedtime. Use
a cotton swab or gauze pad to apply Retin-A. Wash hands immediately
after each use. Use Retin-A as directed, since more frequent or
excessive use does not improve the results, but may increase side
effects. Avoid applying near sensitive skin, such as around the
eyes, mouth, or open cuts to avoid irritation. Note that acne may
appear to worsen when first using Retin-A. Continue therapy to see
the full benefits. It may take 3-6 weeks of continued therapy.
In the morning, apply moisturizer with 15 or higher SPF or an alphahydroxyacid
preparation. This helps counteract dryness and scaling. Avoid sun
exposure during the most intense hours (10 am to 2 pm).
If excessive redness or dryness occurs, reduce Retin-A application
to every other or every third night. Stop Retin-A acne medication
3-4 weeks prior to hair waxing (e.g., upper lip). Otherwise, the
area may be sore and could heal with a brown spot.

Can I use Retin-A with Rogaine?
Retin-A can be used on the scalp to induce hair regrowth and supplement
the effects of Rogaine. It has been suggested that can increase
absorption of Rogaine into the scalp by altering the stratum corneum
(superficial layer) barrier. Compared with a control drug, one study
showed that 0.05% Retin-A tripled absorption of Rogaine locally.

Can
I use cosmetics with Retin-A?
Cosmetics can be used with Retin-A, but skin should be properly
cleaned before applying Retin-A.

Retin-A
side effects
Immediately after applying you may experience:
• warm skin
• mild stinging
• redness
• skin peeling
This should lessen as your skin adjusts. Stop taking Retin-A if
side effects continue or worsen. Retin-A may also increase sensitivity
to sun, wind, and cold.
You may also experience:
• itchiness
• scaling of the skin
Depending on the individual, this can sometimes be very extreme.
Most will experience some itching or scaling if too much Retin-A
is used.

Can I use Retin-A acne medication
during pregnancy?
Since Retin-A is applied topically, usually under 10% passes into
the bloodstream, and even less reaches the baby. More Retin-A will
be absorbed if using more than needed on an area, or on a large
area. The less Retin-A used, the less likely there will be risks
to the baby.
Several studies have been done to try to determine the effects of
Retin-A on pregnancy. These studies have not found babies born to
mothers using Retin-A during pregnancy any more likely to have birth
defects than with mothers not using Retin-A.
However, it may be best to use Retin-A during pregnancy for only
the most severe cases of Acne Vulgaris, and with extreme caution.
Also, it is not known if Retin-A appears in breast milk, so consult
your doctor before breast-feeding while using Retin-A acne medication.
