What is Renova and how does it treat wrinkles?
Renova (Tretinoin emollient cream 0.05%) is a vitamin A derivative. It’s also the same active ingredient as Retin-A, but Retin-A is formulated to treat acne-prone skin and Renova is a rich emollient cream designed specifically to treat fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, surface roughness, and stretch marks.

Renova binds to specific cell receptors on skin. After cellular receptor activation, there is a modification in gene expression, subsequent protein synthesis and cell growth and differentiation. Consequently, the epidermal cell is modified to produce greater amounts of new mature healthy skin. In clinical studies, enhanced production of collagen where Renova was applied have been observed.

While over-the-counter wrinkle creams simply exfoliate the skin’s surface layer, Renova is thought to work on all layers, including the epidermis, where pigmentary changes occur, and deeper portions of the skin, where fine wrinkles are believed to begin. Published medical research has also shown that Renova increases collagen production, contributin to the process by which Renova reduces wrinkles and signs of aging.

Is Renova an effective wrinkle treatment?
In clinical studies examining Renova effectiveness, 60% of participants treated 24 weeks saw some decrease in fine facial wrinkles. Effects on coarse facial wrinkles, mottled hyper pigmentation, skin roughness, and laxity of the facial skin were not as clear. Effects observed on each individual varied from study to study.

Can I use Renova for stretch marks?
A study in the Archives of Dermatology from May 1996, demonstrated that Renova cream considerably improved the appearance of early stretch marks. Renova worked best on new or enlarging stretch marks still pink/reddish in color, such as those that develop during pregnancy. Tretinoin has demonstrated a reduction in stretch marks when applied daily.

What makes Renova better than other stretch mark treatments?
In a paper reported in the Archives of Dermatology, investigators found that a treatment of Tretinoin as a stretch mark cream in the early stages of red/pink stretch marks remarkably improved the appearance of early stretch marks. No improvement was noted in mature "white stretch marks."

How do I use Renova?
Wash your face twice daily with a mild non-soap cleanser, like Cetaphil lotion, available at your local drugstore. Pat skin dry, and wait 10-15 minutes before applying Renova. Make sure to use mild soap when washing and do not wash your face excessively. Abrasive soaps/cleansers/medicated creams/lotions can increase chances of skin irritation.

Apply a thin layer (pea sized) to affected areas at bedtime. Use a cotton swab or gauze pad to apply Renova. Wash hands immediately after each use. Use Renova as directed, since more frequent or excessive use does not improve results, but may increase side effects. Avoid applying near sensitive skin, such as around the eyes, mouth, or open cuts to avoid irritation. Note that acne may appear to worsen when first using Renova. Continue therapy to see the full benefits. It may take 3-6 weeks of continued therapy.

In the morning, apply moisturizer with 15 or higher SPF or an alphahydroxyacid preparation. This helps counteract dryness and scaling. Avoid sun exposure during the most intense hours (10 am to 2 pm).

If excessive redness or dryness occurs, reduce Renova application to every other or every third night. Stop Renova 3-4 weeks prior to hair waxing (e.g., upper lip). Otherwise, the area may be sore and could heal with a brown spot.

Renova results will be gradual with most improvement seen in the first 6 months of continued therapy. If using Renova for acne, the condition may worsen at the beginning and improve with continued use.

When should I see wrinkle or stretch mark reduction?
1-2 months: you will notice smoother skin and softer texture
3-4 months: freckles and brown spots start fading. Wrinkles and fine lines start diminishing. Skin has a rosier glow.
6 months: Benefits should be readily apparent with fewer wrinkles and smoother, more even-toned skin appearance and texture

Can I use cosmetics with Renova?
Cosmetics can be used with Renova, but skin should be properly cleaned before applying the medication.

Can I use Renova during pregnancy?
Tretinoin, the active ingredient in Renova, has been used worldwide for nearly 30 years. In that time, no causative link has been recognized between topical Tretinoin and birth defects. Although current labeling on Renova states that it should not be used during pregnancy, by women trying to become pregnant, or by women at high risk of pregnancy. It is not known if Renova appears in breast milk, so consult your doctor before breast-feeding while using Renova.
