What is Propecia? Propecia is the brand name for finasteride. Finasteride inhibits conversion of the androgen (male hormone) testosterone into 5-alpha-dihydrotesterone (DHT). DHT is present in men’s hair follicles. DHT in each follicle increases as male pattern baldness begins. Propecia reverses this by decreasing the amount of DHT in hair follicle blood. Propecia comes in 1mg tablets, are octagonal shaped and film coated. Propecia tablets are marked with a "P" on one side and "Propecia" on the other. Numerous studies have been done to determine the efficacy of Propecia for hair loss treatment by looking at sections of the scalp through photographic enlargements to determine hair restoration.
