How does Celebrex work?
In the body are two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 helps regulate normal cell function in the blood and stomach. COX-2 contributes to arthritis pain and inflammation by causing the release of specific compounds into the blood called cytokines. Cytokines are compounds that lead to pain and inflammation of joint tissue. Celebrex is the first product to target only the COX-2 enzyme, and has been celebrated as a scientific breakthrough. By inhibiting COX-2, cytokines are inhibited from being released into the blood.

Is Celebrex effective for arthritis treatment?
Osteoarthritis treatment:
Celebrex effectiveness was evaluated for treatment of the signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. A placebo was compared with patients treated with Celebrex in controlled clinical trials involving about 4,200 patients with Osteoarthritis. The duration of clinical trials lasted up to twelve weeks. In patients with Osteoarthritis, treatment with Celebrex 100mg twice daily or 200mg once daily resulted in an improvement in Osteoarthritis severity particularly for joint pain, stiffness, and range of motion. In three 12-week studies of joint pain along with Osteoarthritis flare, Celebrex doses of 100mg given twice daily and 200mg given once daily provided significant reduction of arthritis pain within 24 to 48 hours of dosing. A daily dosage of 200mg has been shown equally effective whether given as 100mg twice or 200mg once.

Rheumatoid Arthritis treatment:
Patients treated with Celebrex showed substantial decreases in joint tenderness /pain and joint swelling compared to placebo. Celebrex was evaluated for treatment of signs and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis in approximately 2,100 patients by comparing Celebrex and placebo treated patients in clinical trials up to 24 weeks. Celebrex demonstrated to be superior to placebo in these studies, using a Rheumatoid Arthritis severity index, a composite score of joint pain, stiffness, and range of motion measures as well as lab measures. In this study, it was shown that a Celebrex dosage of 100mg twice daily and 200mg twice daily were similar in effectiveness. However, the higher dosage of 200mg twice daily is recommended for more severe disease.

Can I take Celebrex if taking other medications?
If you take low-dose aspirin for the deterrence of heart attack or stroke, you can still take Celebrex. However, your risk of developing stomach ulcers increases while taking Celebrex and aspirin together compared to taking Celebrex alone. Celebrex is not a substitute for aspirin for prevention of stroke and heart attack.
(top)

Can I take Celebrex if pregnant?
Celebrex should be avoided in late pregnancy since it may cause problems in the final development of the fetus’ heart.

Is Celebrex a substitute for corticosteroids?
No, Celebrex is not a substitute for corticosteroids and should not be used to treat corticosteroid insufficiency. Abrupt discontinuation of corticosteroids may possibly lead to exacerbation of corticosteroid-responsive illness. Patients on prolonged corticosteroid therapy should have corticosteroid therapy tapered slowly if deciding to stop this medication.
