What is Aldara cream and how is it used to treat HPV?
External genital and perianal warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The resulting warts are sometimes referred to as condyloma acuminata. While Aldara cream hasn't been shown to have antiviral activity, Aldara cream is an immune response modifier that helps the body fight HPV. Aldara cream may do this through the induction of cytokines like alpha-interferon, an anti-viral compound normally produced by the body.

Sexual contact should be avoided while Aldara cream is on the skin. If you have sexual relations, apply Aldara cream afterwards. If Aldara was already applied, wash off the Aldara cream before sex. Aldara may weaken condoms and diaphragms so Aldara should be removed before sexual activity. The effect of Aldara on the transmission of genital warts is unknown.

Aldara side effects
Aldara cream does not destroy healthy skin. Most patients using Aldara cream do not report pain. One common side-effect of Aldara is redness, which may be a sign your immune system is working.

Other common Aldara side-effects:
• skin peeling
• itching, flaking, and swelling around genital warts

Additional Aldara information
Since Aldara cream does not cure the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the cause of genital and perianal warts, new warts may form during Aldara treatment.

Aldara cream may weaken condoms and diaphragms, therefore sexual contact should be avoided while Aldara is on the skin.

It is unknown how Aldara cream affects the spread of genital warts.

Women who become pregnant while using Aldare cream should notify their doctor immediately.

Aldara cream should only be used for external warts, never internal warts (inside vagina/anus).

Skin color changes where Aldara has been applied on the skin have been reported.

Genital warts should not be covered with bandages or closed dressings.

Do not use a large amount of Aldara cream. Apply a thin layer of Aldara completely covering each wart.
